The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is the largest organization representing Law Enforcement Officers throughout the United States. There are more than 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers now who are serving communities throughout the nation, and approximately $330,000 are members of the Fraternal Order of Police.
It is the stated mission of the Fraternal Order of Police to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; and to promote and foster the enforcement of law and order”, while at the same time, serving as an advocate to improve proficiencies of its members in the performance of law enforcement duties. The fraternal organization consist of sworn law enforcement officers organized in 2,300 local chapters (lodges), state lodges and the national Grand Lodge.
For decades, The Fraternal Order of Police have labored to increase the efficiency of law enforcement, while striving “to improve the law enforcement profession, the efficiencies of Police Officers, and establish public confidence in services dedicated to the protection of life and property”.
The International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) is said to be the largest Union per se, with approximately 20,000 members and about 20% of its members are affiliated with organized labor. In addition to fighting to support the needs of law enforcement officers, the IUPA also works to improve legislation that protects the public safety of officers, as well as the needs of its members. They are committed to supporting its members and staff in various ways, including but not limited to providing good equipment, sufficient staff resources and fair wage.
